LRC Book Critic Review - The Bomb that brought us Together by Brian Conaghan

Image
The Bomb that brought us Together This book was written by Brian Conaghad, it was shortlisted for the Costa book award.  It is about the war and hatred between Small town and Old Country. Small town is home to Charlie; one day, Pavel arrives, he and his family are refuges from Old Country. They become best friends even though Pav is the last person he should be friends with. When the bombs and Old Country troops come, they threaten to overthrow the government using force, their friendship and the survival of Small Town is put to the test. As well as coping with the pressure, Charlie fantasises his relationship with a certain red head, Erin F. The book cover was very aesthetically pleasing and the book was really interesting to read. My favourite character in the book is Charlie, even though he is bullied into committing a crime, he ends up doing the right thing and saves his friendship with Pav. Plus he was very patient with Pavel when he taught him the Small

LRC Book Critic Review - Being Miss Nobody – by Tamsin Winter

Being Miss Nobody – by Tamsin Winter This book is about Rosalind, she has trouble speaking to anyone other than her mum, dad, Seb and her neighbour. She is constantly bullied and on top of that she has to cope with her brother having Cancer and the inevitable day that he might die. Seb and Rosalind work together on a blog, it is a way to speak out about the bullies in her school while being able to be anonymous. She’s known as ‘Miss Nobody’ but this platform leads to her using it for the wrong reasons. Seb is really positive and happy even though he might die, Rosalind is the opposite – she is afraid and frustrated because she is ‘mute’ at school.  It was really heart-warming when Seb gave up his wish of going to Egypt in hope that Rosalind can voice her opinion whenever she wanted. My favourite character is Seb because he is really encouraging and nice to Rosalind even though he was slowly dying. This book is available from the LRC.

LRC Book Critic Review - The Pearl Thief by Julia Beaufort-Stuart

Image
The Pearl Thief This book is about Julia Beaufort-Stuart (Julie). She wakes up in hospital and can’t recall what had happened to her. She finds out that it wasn’t just an accident but something way more sinister. I found this book very interesting. In the book, two individuals tell her grandfather that his collection of about three hundred pearl could not be sold /worth much- which was a lie, it was priceless. They took the pearls themselves when Julie’s grandfather died, they hid it in a jar and were going to run away with it but Julie foiled their plans.  In the end, it was very emotional as she destroyed most of the pearls by driving over them in the gravel. Plus, Ellen (her friend/ best friend/ girlfriend?) swallowed a pearl at the end. My favourite character is Julie; this is because she is very clever and cunning, although she likes to make out with pretty much everyone. This book is available from the LRC.

LRC Boook Critic Review - A Fault in our Stars by John Green

The Fault In Our Stars The Fault In Our Stars by John Green is an awesome yet heartbreaking book. The book is based around a 16 year old with thyroid cancer that has affected her lungs, called Hazel Grace Lancaster, meeting the love of her life.  She realizes that life is too short to love anyone properly. The story starts off with Hazel being reluctant to go to her support group, which was supposed to make her feel better about having cancer. At the group she meets a boy called Augustus Waters. He had osteosarcoma, a bone cancer, which caused him to lose his right leg.  They start talking and find out a lot more about each other. They both have a passion for books. Hazel's favourite book is An imperial affliction .  The book reminds her a lot about herself. The main character has cancer. She always wondered why the book ended in the middle of a sentence. She had emailed the author many times but he had never responded. Augustus had a go at contacting him and succe
