Instapoets? Are they real Poets? Can you do better?
Instagram poets are, of course, simply poets, but they’re a phenomenon unto themselves because they have cleverly managed to combine the internet’s love of an inspirational quote with artful typography and immediate ‘shareability’. Poems are ideally suited, in some ways, to social media, because they pack so much meaning into so little language. A slow but steady movement has been gaining traction – and followers – online. Dubbed ‘Instapoetry’, it often went under hastags and was filed by poets looking for ways to express themselves. These poems are short – usually not more than five or six lines – but they paint vivid pictures, tell stories and leave behind lessons.
