OPHS World Book Week 2024

At OPHS we celebrate not only World Book Day but also a WHOLE WEEK of celebrating books and authors!

This year’s World Book Day is Thursday 7th March.  But at OPHS Library, we celebrate all week, from Monday 4th to Friday 8th

Please check your school emails for all of our fabulous competitions and events for this year’s World Book Week!

What is World Book Day about?

The World Book Day mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income. We all want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, with a life-long habit of reading for pleasure and the improved life chances this brings them.

World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. As World Book Day founder, Baroness Gail Rebuck, recalls “We wanted to do something to reposition reading and our message is the same today as it was then – that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting, and has the power to transform lives.”

Book Reviews and Recommendations:

My favourite book:

My favourite book is Alex Rider Nightshade .It begins with a boy, Alex Rider.  A fifteen year old boy who works for the special operational division of MI6. He is recruited to pretend to be Julius Grief, his replica made by Dr. Hugo Grief in book 2.

He is now in the prison sharing a room with a boy from the organisation he had to deal with, Nightshade.  His name is Freddy.  After Alex opens his eyes they escape to the organisation.

This book has a lot of plot twists and advanced vocabulary which really piqued my interest. The author,Anthony Horowitz really makes him look like a mini James Bond.  His books are best sellers.

He is also the writer of the book I am currently reading , Oblivion. It was made from 2009 to 2012.

The Alex Rider series has always helped me exit reality and enter the fictional world of entertainment.  It's all my wishes combined in one book.

If I could nominate the best author, It would be him.The advanced vocabulary and strong words just grab me in and help me see Alex’s perspective.

Missing - Catherine McPhail - book review

I rate this book a 10/10 as it was a really good book and I loved the plot that was included in the story. The way the characters were portrayed and how the whole story went overall was amazing and very interesting.  I like how different characters came into the story and showcased different personalities.

My least favourite part of the book was when the main character went to the cemetery as I felt that scene wasn't really needed. My favourite part of the book was when the whole family sat down and talked about her feelings and sorted their issues together, it was really heartwarming.

I really enjoyed this book and would have loved to read it again as I took my time to read it and enjoy the arrange of plots and different types of stories.

Then on Halloween night, Harry gets a surprise. His own name gets chosen from the Goblet of Fire.  He will face many dangerous tasks But with the help of his friends, Ron and Hermione, he might just make it through - Alive!

Book Review: Wonder by R J Palacio

Wonder is a very popular children's book and is very inspiring,  teaching kids that everyone is beautiful in their own way. In 2017 the director Stephan Chbosky decided to make a movie based on a sentimental story. The story also teaches children that just because children are different in appearance it does not mean that they cannot do all the things a normal children can.

Book Review: Hacker by Malorie Blackman

This is a book called Hacker.  It is a fun and enjoyable book with a very simple concept.  This book is written by Malorie Blackman  and it is about someone's adopted dad who is accused of taking one million pounds from the bank.

The main character is called Victoria but everyone calls her Vicky.  She has recently had a rough friendship with her best friend and she and her adopted brother are trying to find evidence why their dad was not the person at the bank that stole the money.  The dad came home but the government took his password.

Book Review: Pegasus and the Flame by Kate O’Hearn

This book is a thrilling adventure of how Emily becomes the flame. The flame is what gives the Olympians power. This is Greek mythology but written a bit differently into a fiction story.  At the time when Emily finds Pegasus there is a huge thunderstorm, up in the sky Zeus/Jupiter and his brothers were fighting the Nirads who wanted to extinguish the flame.  Epic battles with gruesome monsters, desperate chases from a corrupt governmental agency, captivating flights astride the beautiful winged-stallion and one heroic quest to save Olympus before the Olympic flame burns out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ook is a very good book and if you're into adventure books then this is Book Review: Alex Rider             Point Blanc

9781844280933: Point Blanc (Alex Rider)

Alex Rider, Point Blanc is a really nice book it's about  murder, death and most importantly, confusion.

I was confused at the beginning of the book because I didn't understand why he was doing this but as soon as I read more of the book my questions were answered.  Then new questions came to mind.

Thats why I love this book  !!!

Book Review - The Maze Runner

By James Dashner

9781910655108: The Maze Runner: 1 (Maze Runner Series)

I watched the film adaptation of the book by James Dashner called The Maze Runner when I was a kid. I was amused by the suspense that was created with the sound effects. Powerful words, emotive language. But the book is way better.  Overall I'll rate this book  7/10.

Another Review of the same Book

The Maze Runner is a very famous trilogy of books and movies.

My favourite movie/book is probably the last one (The Death Cure.)

I prefer the movies over the books but I still think the books are very good.

Similarities:

  • Same names

  • The movies and books contain the same characters and roles

  • Same characters dying

Differences:

  • Different ways of characters dying

  • Plot is kind of different (especially the 2nd book.)

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming... The monster in his back garden, though, this monster is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth. Costa Award winner Patrick Ness spins a tale from the final idea of much-loved Carnegie Medal winner Siobhan Dowd, whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself. Darkly mischievous and painfully funny, A Monster Calls is an extraordinarily moving novel of coming to terms with loss from two of our finest writers for young adults.

Book Review - Geek Girl Sunny Side Up

By Holly Smale

A book that I enjoyed reading was Geek Girl, Sunny Side Up. I enjoyed this book because it was about a girl who didn't always fit in but she really enjoyed fashion and went to fashion week in Paris first to do her dream job.

The author of this book is Holly Smale.  Her book series Geek Girl is really enjoyable

OPHS Student poem - Why you should use our Library

The Library

The library is a door to imagination and the key is the book.

The library is a place of peace and relaxation.

The library is a place to enjoy yourself and read.

The library is a place to help others and get helped.

But most of all… the library is a place to read and… feel free….

Oaks Park Library review

What I like about the library is the variety of books there are. There are very nice librarians and it is very easy to pick a wonderful book.

The library is not just about how many books you read or how many words you read or about a famous Author, just  to impress your friends.  It is about enjoying the book you read.

Positive things about our school library!

The school's library is awesome… Here are my reasons why: They have a dvd player so we can watch movies on it…. They have various books for us to use… We have computers so you can do your homework… We have great library teachers… and finally the library is calm and it's huge… The books there are amazing!  You must read every day for 20 minutes.  There are books such as horror, fairy tales, peaceful, happy and calm books in our library!  To me, the library means to have intelligence and calmly  read the books here or watch the movies our librarian puts on…  Also it means to do all your homework in time as we have the computers to use for homework.  Our library has so many books.  Our library is  colourful with an upstairs as well. Keep reading!

Our School Library

The library is a great place to learn, to read and  to be able  to read many books of your choice and the great part of it is that you can watch movies and Mrs Taylor shows you books that you will love to read.

You can do many things and you can be able to read books and take them home for year 7 and 8 and then you have to do your quiz and write it down in your planner ASAP.

The books that I read were really good. Some of them I liked, some of them I didn’t like.

I really love the school library because it’s really interesting being here.

I really love the library teacher and I can’t believe that there are so many books in there.

I really want to read all of the books when I get older.

The school library is the best place in the world .

What I Think About our OPHS Library

  • It has many books

  • It is really big

  • It has computers both upstairs and downstairs

  • It has a great range of books

In conclusion, I really like this library and the range of books it contains. It's creative to have computers in a library where students from the school can come in mornings, breaks, lunch and after school.

Mrs Taylor’s Prepossessing Library

As you enter the library, your mind succumbs to the atmosphere of words. The books, from Oliver Twist to the Hound of Baskervilles, confuse you with baffling words. She is a lovely teacher who advises what beautiful books to read. She is the best (better than the rest) and always chooses insightful movies that have been adapted from books that are in our Library!

The library is as serene as sitting on the Himalayan plateaus and fields near Nepal with the sun shining on our faces. I have only one thing to say… SHE IS THE BEST!

Reading is for leaders’

Why EVERYONE should read:

The Library is a place where students go to read, do homework and their Accelerated Reader program. Sarah Mussi

In 2001 Sarah was shortlisted by the BBC Worldwide Children’s Talent Fiction Award. Her submission made it into second place (out of 5,000 candidates). Sarah was offered a publishing contract for her novel The Lion Skin Rug, a magical fantasy.

Although the award was prestigious and the judges, Michael Rosen & Jacqueline Wilson, were very earnest, changes to the BBCW resulted in them abandoning the ‘new’ children’s list they’d envisaged publishing with Penguin Books.

This was a blow.  The Lion Skin Rug was under contract to the BBC and could not be extricated easily. Sarah however was undaunted. She went on to write her second novel, The Door of No Return, an adventure thriller set in England and Ghana.

The Door of No Return went on to win the Glen Dimplex Children’s Book of the Year Award, was shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award and given Library Guild status in the USA. Her third novel, The Last of the Warrior Kings, was published in April 2008 [Hodder]. The Last of the Warrior Kings was shortlisted for the Lewisham Book Award, inspired a London Walk, is used as a text in Lewisham schools and was optioned for film.  Sarah currently has two new book contracts with Hodder and now a third with Hot Key Books.

Sarah has donated a short story to FREE?, an Amnesty International anthology.  She has appeared at many festivals, including Henley and Guildford; she is a regular tutor for the Winchester Writers’ Conference, and has given workshops for SCBWI as well as to many schools and public libraries. She is also the current Chair of CWISL (Children’s Writers and Illustrators in South London).

Sarah was born in Cheltenham, raised in the Cotswolds, attended Pates Grammar School for Girls, got a BA in Fine Art from Winchester School of Art and an MA from the Royal College of Art. She spent over fifteen years in West Africa as a teacher and now teaches English in Lewisham.

Sarah visited OPHS recently and the students absolutely loved her Author talk and workshop.  Sarah’s trilogy, Snowdonia Chronicles is well read in our Library!

                 Book Poems

My Poem about Books

What do I see?

I see paper

With a lot of pages

What is in the paper?

a bunch of words

With lots of vocabulary in it

What do we call this?

We call this a book

A book that we read…

Facts about Books

  • There are more than 130 million books around the world!

  • The most famous book sold is the Bible itself

  • The World's most famous book is Remembrance of Things Past

                                           Book Poem!

The second you open a book

Is where all the magic begins…

Interesting stories,facts and more

Is what you'll find in a book!

Different kinds of books

Which one suits your interest?

But most important of all, don't forget to return your book.

Trust me you won’t regret a thing.

So bring a book, sit back and enjoy!

Balloons!

Who…

Who is the most powerful?

Is it the queen,

Is it your parents

Who is the most powerful?

Is it scientists,

Is it your headteacher

Who…

Who is the most powerful>?

Is it your brother,

Is it your sister

No

So who is the most powerful?

It is you,

It is us

We are the most powerful

But only if we work together

If we work together,

We will achieve great things

Like how we reached the moon

Or how we invented the telescope

Or is it the first plane

It was us

We are the most powerful, together.

Books are amazing

Books are the windows that open up your mind,

They let you see the light inside,

Books are amazing,

So stop being lazy,

Pick up a book,

And get shook by how you get engulfed in seconds,

And then you become a legend,

What are you waiting for?

Grab a book and start reading,

Remember this,

Readers are leaders!

I love reading,

Its peaceful,and calm,

And I can enjoy your book while being gleeful!

How to Write an

Epic Short Story

\\OAKSPARK017\StaffHomes$\Ltaylor\private\Downloads\epic image.PNG

Write a short epic

Truth is stranger than fiction. Often it is funnier too. Short Epics are nuggets from the daily news that might raise a smile or prompt a remark that starts: “You wouldn’t believe it, but…” They must be no longer than 140 characters long including spaces. Do have a go at writing one and send it to ltaylor@oakspark.redbridge.sch.uk and your epic story will be in our next issue of our online Library Newsletter!

When I glanced again his face had resumed that red-Indian composure which had made so many regard him as a machine rather than a man.

Dr. Watson Observing Sherlock Holmes

-The Crooked Man

‘Having gathered these facts, Watson, I smoked several pipes over them, trying to separate those which were crucial from others which were merely incidental.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-The Crooked Man

 —

He [Holmes] loved to lie in the very centre of five millions of people, with his filaments stretching out and running through them, responsive to every little rumor or suspicion of unsolved crime.

Dr. Watson’s Observation of Sherlock Holmes

-The Resident Patient

‘My mind is like a racing engine, tearing itself to pieces because it is not connected up with the work for which it was built.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-The Man with the Twisted Lip

“My mind,” he said, “rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation. That is why I have chosen my own particular profession,—or rather created it, for I am the only one in the world.”

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-The Sign of Four

Chapter 1: “The Science of Deduction”

‘When a doctor does go wrong, he is the first of criminals.  He has the nerve and he has the knowledge.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

The Adventure of the Speckled Band

‘Nothing clears up a case so much as stating it to another person.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-Silver Blaze

‘I think that you know me well enough, Watson, to understand that I am by no means a nervous man. At the same time, it is stupidity rather than courage to refuse to recognize danger when it is close upon you.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-The Final Problem

 —

‘I confess that I have been blind as a mole, but it is better to learn wisdom late than never to learn it at all.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-The Man with the Twisted Lip

‘A man should keep his little brain attic stocked with all the furniture that he is likely to use, and the rest he can put away in the lumber-room of his library where he can get it if he wants.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-The Five Orange Pips

‘I consider that a man’s brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose.  A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands on it. Now the skillful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic.  He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order.  It is a mistake to think that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent.  Depend upon it – there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before.  It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-A Study in Scarlet

Chapter 2: “The Science of Deduction”

‘It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-A Case of Identity
