BookTrust teams up with Waterstones Children's Laureate Cressida Cowell and World Book Day for special #PassThePen

#PassThePen is Cressida Cowell's initiative to promote emerging authors and illustrators of colour - and there will be a special World Book Day edition this year.

BookTrust has teamed up with Waterstones Children's Laureate Cressida Cowell and World Book Day 2022 for a very special edition of #PassThePen.

It sees top authors and illustrators handing over their social media accounts to rising stars, giving them the chance to talk about their work and inspirations.

For the special edition, World Book Day legacy authors and illustrators of the last 25 years will be paired with up-and-coming writers and illustrators of colour to champion new voices and help give all children the chance to read a range of books that reflect them and their wider communities.

During the celebrations, the following pairs will be taking part:

  • Sharna Jackson will pass the pen to Maisie Chan

  • Sita Brahmachari will pass the pen to Lily Dyu

  • Francesca Simon will pass the pen to Burhana Islam

  • Cressida Cowell will pass the pen to Nizrana Farook

  • Ben Bailey-Smith will pass the pen to Alex Wharton

  • Dapo Adeola will pass the pen to Akhran Girmay

  • Nathan Bryon will pass the pen to Alex Falase-Koya

  • Lydia Monks will pass the pen to Krina Patel-Sage

  • Muhammad Khan will pass the pen to Clare Weze

  • Holly Smale will pass the pen to Sabine Adeyinka

  •

'Children need access to a diverse range of stories'

Jill Coleman, Director of Children's Books at BookTrust, said: 'I am so pleased that #PassThePen is back as part of World Book Day 2022. The campaign allows the future of the literary world a unique opportunity to tell their stories and plays an important role in championing creators of colour.

'Children need to have access to a diverse range of books and stories. It is through platforms like this and the support that we offer to writers and illustrators of colour that BookTrust hopes to create fair and equal opportunities across the industry for everyone.

'I want to say a huge thank you to all those who have taken part in #PassThePen this year - without you, these stories may have gone unheard.'

BookTrust will also be supporting World Book Day's ambition to ensure more children have the opportunity to own a book by distributing 90,000 £1 book tokens through Bookstart coordinators across the country.

Opportunities to celebrate and read together

Elsewhere during the celebrations, a very special World Book Day birthday event will be live-streamed on Monday, 28 February in association with the Roald Dahl Story Company, Royal Shakespeare Company, Lloyd Webber Theatres and Penguin Random House.

A number of World Book Day £1 book authors, including Cressida Cowell will be joined by the cast of Matilda the Musical for a celebration of reading, which will be available to watch on the World Book Day website.

World Book Day's CEO Cassie Chadderton said: 'This milestone anniversary is an important moment for the charity to reflect on the last 25 years and look forward to the future. We will be engaging with more children than ever to promote reading for pleasure.

'There are still 400,000 children in the UK who don't have a book of their own, so our focus is to ensure as many children as possible receive a World Book Day £1 book this year, alongside providing lots of opportunities for everyone to celebrate and read together.' Book Review: Wonder by R J Palacio

Wonder is a very popular children's book and is very inspiring,  teaching kids that everyone is beautiful in their own way. In 2017 the director Stephan Chbosky decided to make a movie based on a sentimental story. The story also teaches children that just because children are different in appearance does not mean they cannot do all the things a normal children can.

Book Review: Hacker by Malorie Blackman

This is a book called Hacker.  It is a fun and enjoyable book with a very simple concept.  This book is made by Malorie Blackman  and it is about someone's adopted dad and he is accused of taking one million pounds from the bank.

The main character is called Victoria but everyone calls her Vicky.  She has recently had a rough friendship with her best friend and she and her adopted brother are trying to find evidence why their dad was not the person at the bank that stole the money.  The dad came home but the government took his password.

Book Review: Pegasus and the flame by Kate O’Hearn

This book is a thrilling adventure of how Emily becomes the flame. The flame is what gives the Olympians power. This is Greek mythology but written a bit differently into a fiction story.  At the time when Emily finds Pegasus there is a huge thunderstorm, up in the sky Zeus/Jupiter and his brothers were fighting the Nirads who wanted to extinguish the flame.  Epic battles with gruesome monsters, desperate chases from a corrupt governmental agency, captivating flights astride the beautiful winged-stallion and one heroic quest to save                        Olympus before the Olympic flame burns out.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ook is a very good book and if you're into adventure books then this is the perfect book for you

Book Review: Alex Rider

Point blanc

Alex Rider, Point Blanc is a really nice book it's about  murder, death and most importantly, confusion.

I was confused because I didn't understand  why he was doing this but as soon as another book came out my questions were answered .  Then new questions came to mind .

Thats why I love this book  !!!

        The Maze Runner

         By James Dashner

I watched the film adaptation of the book by James Dashner called The Maze Runner when I was a kid. I was amused by the suspense that was created with the sound effects. Powerful words, emotive language. Overall I'll rate this book  7/10.

Another Review of the same Author:

The Maze Runner is a very famous trilogy of books and movies.

My favourite movie/book is probably the last one (The Death Cure.)

I prefer the movies over the books but I still think the books are very good.

Similarities:

  • Same names

  • The movies and books contain the same characters and roles

  • Same characters dying

Differences:

  • Different ways of characters dying

  • Plot is kind of different (especially the 2nd book.)

Anthony Horrowitz: The Falcon’s Malteaser

The Diamond brothers are a series of books in which ‘Tim Diamond’ (real name Herbert Simple) and his younger brother Nick go on various adventures as detectives. In this book, Tim and Nick are struggling to find a way to earn money when suddenly, a man named Johnny Naples, a dwarf, tells them to hide a suspicious package for him for 200 pounds as he tries to explain why but fails. The next day, Tim and Nick find Johnny dead in a hotel unexpectedly, and after all this, they unwrap this package to find out that the package was a box of maltesers. Why would someone be after a box of maltesers so bad ? read this book if you love a good detective story!

A book that I enjoyed reading was geek girl sunny side up. I enjoyed this book because it was about a girl who didn't always fit in but she really enjoyed fashion and went to fashion week in Paris first to do her dream job.

The author of this book is Holly Smale.  Her book series Geek Girl is really enjoyable

Why you should use our Library

The Library

The library is a door to imagination and the key is the book.

The library is a place of peace and relaxation.

The library is a place to enjoy yourself and read.

The library is a place to help others and get helped.

But most of all… the library is a place to read and… feel free….

Oaks Park Library review

What I like about the library is the variety of books there are. There are very nice librarians and it is very easy to get a book.

The library is not just about how many books you read or how many words you read or about a famous Author, just  to impress your friends.  It is about enjoying the book you read.

One of the books I read was called the Hero Pup and I really liked it because it is about how you can train your dog.

My review of the book is 10 out of 10

Positive things about the school library!

The school's library is awesome… Here are my reasons why: They have a dvd player so we can watch movies on it…. They have various books for us to use… We have computers so you can do your homework… We have great library teachers… and finally the library is calm and it's huge… The books there are amazing!  You must read every day for 20 minutes.  There are books such as horror, fairy tales, peaceful, happy and calm books in our library!  To me, the library means to have intelligence and calmly  read the books here or watch the movies our librarian puts on…  Also it means to do all your homework in time as we have the computers to use for homework.  Our library has so many books.  Our library is  colourful with an upstairs as well. Keep reading!

The library is a great place to learn, read and be able  to read many books of your choice and the great part of it is that you can watch movies and Mrs Taylor shows you the book you should read. Secondly, if you don’t like reading she will show you many books .

You can do many things and you can be able to read books and take them home for year 7 and 8 and then you have to do your quiz and write it down in your planner ASAP.

The books that I read were really good. Some of them I liked, some of them I didn’t like.

I really love the school library because it’s really interesting being here.

I really love the library teacher and I can’t believe that there are so many books in there.

I really want to read all of the books when I get older.

The school library is the best place in the world .

What I Think About our OPHS Library

  • It has many books.

  • It is really big.

  • It has computers both upstairs and downstairs.

  • It has a great range of books.

In conclusion, I really like this library and the range of books it contains. It's creative to have computers in a library where students from the school can come in mornings, breaks, lunch and after school.

Mrs Taylor’s Prepossessing Library

As you enter the library, your mind succumbs to the atmosphere of words. The books from Oliver Twist to the hound of Baskervilles confuse you with baffling words. She is a lovely teacher who advises what beautiful books to read. She is the best(better than the rest) and always chooses insightful movies.

The library is as serene as sitting on the Himalayan plateaus and fields near Nepal with the sun shining on our faces. I have only one thing to say… SHE IS THE BEST!

Reading is for leaders’

Why EVERYONE should read:

  • Reading inspires people

  • It improves your communication skills

  • It can take you to a whole new world filled with

`Things you love

  • It makes you live longer

  • It can reduce stress

  • It allows you to learn new things

                                                                                       Books into movies:

There is a lot of different books in the library,
There is so much to choose from,
So you can always keep reading,
Reading is very important in lots of different ways,
An example is learning new vocabulary,
It is very fun to read,
Because of all the different books,
It draws you into the adventure,
It has all the different books to fit your type,
It is very fun to read with all the different books,
It ranges from all the different genres,
So it's very fun to read!

The Library….

The Library is a place where people or students go to read, do homework and their Accelerated Reader program. They are always welcomed by the great Library Teacher (Miss Taylor).Things I like about the Library are the great displays, the wide range of books, specific ages of the books and lastly the computers.

In conclusion, the Library is an amazing and great enviroment. If you go to the Library you can pick out a book of your choice. There's also some rules such as no food,no drink and more.

Book Poems

Poem of books

What do I see?

I see paper

With a lot of pages

What is in the paper?

a bunch of words

With lots of vocabulary in it

What do we call this?

We call this a book

A book that we read…

Facts about books

  • There are more than 130 million books around the world!

  • The most famous book sold is the Bible itself

  • The world's famous book is Remembrance of Things Past

                                                     Book Poem!

The second you open a book

Is where all the magic begins…

Interesting stories,facts and more

Is what you'll find in a book!

Different kinds of books

Which one suits your interest?

But most important of all, don't forget to return your book.

Trust me you wont regret a thing.

So bring a book, sit back and enjoy!

Balloons!

Who…

Who is the most powerful?

Is it the queen,

Is it your parents

Who is the most powerful?

Is it scientists,

Is it your headteacher

Who…

Who is the most powerful>?

Is it your brother,

Is it your sister

No

So who is the most powerful?

It is you,

It is us

We are the most powerful

But only if we work together

If we work together,

We will achieve great things

Like how we reached the moon

Or how we invented the telescope

Or is it the first plane

It was us

We are the most powerful, together.

Books are amazing

Books are the windows that open up your mind,

They let you see the light inside,

Books are amazing,

So stop being lazy,

Pick up a book,

And get shook by how you get engulfed in seconds,

And then you become a legend,

What are you waiting for?

Grab a book and start reading,

Remember this,

Readers are leaders!

I love reading,

Its peaceful,and calm,

And I can enjoy your book while being gleeful!

                  Wonder by RJ Palacio

'Has the power to move hearts and change minds' Guardian -Tremendously uplifting and a novel of all-too-rare power' Sunday Express An amazing book . . . I absolutely loved it. I cried my eyes out.' Tom Fletcher read the award-winning, multi-million copy bestselling phenomenon that is WONDER.'My name is August. I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.'Auggie wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old. He does ordinary things - eating ice cream, playing on his Xbox. He feels ordinary - inside. But ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids aren't stared at wherever they go. Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been home-schooled by his parents his whole life. Now, for the first time, he's being sent to a real school - and he's dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted - but can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, underneath it all? A funny, frank, astonishingly moving debut - and a true global phenomenon - to read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page.

There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom by Louis Sachar

The wonderfully funny and richly warm novel by the bestselling, award-winning author of Holes. Meet Bradley Chalkers. He's the oldest child in the class. He tells ENORMOUS lies. He picks fights with girls. The teachers say he has 'serious behaviour problems'. And no one likes him ... Except Carla, the new school counsellor. She thinks Bradley is kind and generous, and she even enjoys his far-fetched stories. Carla knows that Bradley could change, if only he weren't afraid to try. Sometimes the hardest thing in the world is believing in yourself. A heartwarming story of bravery and acceptance from Louis Sachar, the bestselling author of Holes and Fuzzy Mud.

Tom’s Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce

When Tom is sent to his aunt's house for the summer he resigns himself to weeks of boredom. Lying awake one night he listens to the grandfather clock in the hall strike every hour. Eleven . . . Twelve . . . Thirteen!!! Tom rushes down the stairs and opens the back door. There, awaiting him, is a beautiful garden. A garden that shouldn't exist. And there are children in the garden too - are they ghosts? Or is it Tom who is really the ghost . . .

The Bubble Wrap Boy By Phil Earle

The new book from the award-winning Phil Earle, author of Heroic and Being Billy. All my life I've been tiny Charlie from the Chinese Chippie, whose only friend is Sinus, the kid who stares at walls. But I believe that everyone's good at something. I've just got to work out what my something is... Charlie's found his secret talent: skateboarding. It's his one-way ticket to popularity. All he's got to do is practice, and nothing's going to stop him - not his clumsiness, not his overprotective mum, nothing. Except Charlie isn't the only one in his family hiding a massive secret, and his next discovery will change everything. How do you stay on the board when your world is turned upside down?Phil Earle was born, raised and schooled in Hull. His first job was as a care worker in a children's home, an experience that influenced the ideas behind Being Billy and Saving Daisy. He then trained as a drama therapist and worked in a therapeutic community in south London, caring for traumatized and abused adolescents. After a couple of years in the care sector, Phil chose the more sedate lifestyle of a bookseller, and now works in children's publishing. Phil lives in south-east London with his wife and children, but Hull will always be home.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming... The monster in his back garden, though, this monster is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth. Costa Award winner Patrick Ness spins a tale from the final idea of much-loved Carnegie Medal winner Siobhan Dowd, whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself. Darkly mischievous and painfully funny, A Monster Calls is an extraordinarily moving novel of coming to terms with loss from two of our finest writers for young adults.

Write a short epic

Truth is stranger than fiction. Often it is funnier too. Short Epics are nuggets from the daily news that might raise a smile or prompt a remark that starts: “You wouldn’t believe it, but…” They must be no longer than 140 characters long including spaces. -The Man with the Twisted Lip

‘A man should keep his little brain attic stocked with all the furniture that he is likely to use, and the rest he can put away in the lumber-room of his library where he can get it if he wants.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-The Five Orange Pips

‘I consider that a man’s brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose.  A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands on it. Now the skillful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic.  He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order.  It is a mistake to think that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent.  Depend upon it – there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before.  It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-A Study in Scarlet

Chapter 2: “The Science of Deduction”

‘It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important.’

Sherlock Holmes Quote

-A Case of Identity
